Biography

William, son of John McMann and Margaret Ranger. His birth was registered at Otepopo in July 1888.

He was employed as a abourer by R Grant of Georgetown and served with the Dunedin Rifle Volunteers.

In 1916, William enlisted WWI, Army No 29558, rank Private. NZEF 12th Reinforcements, 12th Battalion, NZRB. In October 1916 he embarked overseas with his unit on the troop ship Willochra. William served for 2 years overseas. He was wounded in action in October 1918 in France.

He also served with the Home Guard in WWII and on August 2 1942 was posted as Temporary Lieutenant, firstly with the Oamaru Battalion to command No 1 Herbert Platoon and then transferred to the Waihemo Battalion.

William married in 1921 to Lillian Ledgerton at Otepopo. Lillian passed away in 1954 aged 56.

William died in 1970 at Oamaru aged 82 and was buried on July 6 at Oamaru Old Cemetery. BLK 211 PLOT 37,38 Lillian is also buried there.
