William Linn McMillen, the son of George McMillen and Nancy Maria Galloway, was born 18 October 1829, Hillsboro, Ohio, he died 8 February 1902, Columbus, Ohio.[1][2]

On 18 April 1861, Franklin, Ohio, William married the widow Elizabeth Jane Neil King (1824-1897).[4] Elizabeth's first husband was Thomas W. King (1820-1851). Elizabeth was the daughter of William Neil and Hannah S. Schwing. [5]

Military Service

Civil War Union Brevet Major General. He graduated from Starling Medical College, Columbus, Ohio, in 1852 and was a surgeon in the Russian army from 1855, till the end of the Crimean war. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted as surgeon of the 1st Ohio infantry in April, 1861. On 19 August 1861, he mustered into the Field and Staff of the Ohio 95th Volunteer Infantry, promoted Colonel, 19 August 1862 and was wounded 30 August 1862, at Richmond, Kentucky. He led the brigade at the Battle of Nashville, Tennessee, was brevetted Brigadier General of U.S. Volunteers on 16 December 1864 and commanded the district after General Lee's surrender. For distinguished war service, he was brevetted Major General of U.S. Volunteers on 13 March 1865. After the war, he became a planter in Louisiana, served two terms in the state legislature, was postmaster of New Orleans from 1878 to 1883 and upon retirement returned to his home state of Ohio.
