Denis/Dennis McNamara was born on 8 Jan 1841 in Galway, Ireland [1].
His parents were John McNAMARA and Bridget HART. He was the eldest of five children - two younger sisters Catherine and Mary Ann, and two younger brothers James and Thomas [2].
Denis immigrated to Australia in 1953 at age 12 with his parents and siblings from Ireland aboard the ship 'Standard' [3][4][5].
The Government ship 'Standard', was a vessel of 714 tons, travelled from Plymouth on 2 July 1853. The Standard was a three masted sailing ship, constructed in Miramichi, New Brunswick, Canada, in 1848, built of wood and sheathed in yellow metal, owned by Wilson & Co and registered in the Port of London [6]. The family settled in Paris Creek, South Australia.
He married Sarah ANDERSON, daughter of William Alexander ANDERSON and Mary Millington, on 29 Apr 1874 at Mt Barker, South Australia. Denis was aged 29, Sarah was 26 and they were both single. (The age for Denis at his marriage conflicts with the age recorded on the passenger list for the Standard) [7].
Together, Denis and Sarah had 12 children. John [8], James [9], Mary [10], Bridget [11], Thomas [12], Andrew [13], Catherine[14], Edward [15], Henry [16], Ann [17], Margaret [18], and George [19].
Denis was a farm labourer all around the district of Bugle Ranges, Macclesfield and Strathalbyn, South Australia, he could turn his hand to anything to supplement the family income; including road works, burning charcoal and fencing [20].
Denis purchased Section 2026 in the Hundred of Bremer between 1873-1878 [21]. In 1880 Denis purchased Section 2792, a total of 40 acres at Macclesfield, the family grew potatoes and kept cows and pigs and Denis again took up other work to supplement their income [22].
Denis passed away on 7 Aug 1915, aged 74, at Macclesfield, South Australia [23]. He was buried at Macclesfield, South Australia [24].
