Hon. Martin Luther McQuown was born Jan, 18, 1853 in Rayne Township, Indiana Co., Pennsylvania.[1]
His father and eldest brother served in the Civil War and returned crippled, with little to support them.
Luther came to New Washington, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania in 1868 and began to be self supporting by working on the farms, in the wood, and wherever he could find an opportunity to earn an honest dollar. In the intervals of his labors he found time to go to school, and was able to acquire the rudiments of a good education.
He qualified as a teacher and taught in the public schools from 1871 - 1878.
On Christmas Day in 1878, he was united in marriage with Miss Virginia Flegal, the accomplished daughter of J. L. Flegal, of Goshen Township, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania.[2] They have been blessed with three children - two daughter and one son.
He was elected superintendent of public schools on May 8, 1878, and re-elected in 1881.
He studied law and was admitted to the Bar of Clearfield in 1884.
In 1888 he was elected chairman of the Republican County Committee.
He became editor and proprietor of the "Raftsman's Journal", the leading Republican newspaper of the county. in 1890.
In 1894 he was elected Senator in the 34th Senatorial District.[3]
He passed away on the 24th of July 1929 in Seattle, Washington and was buried some time after at Hillcrest Cemetery in Clearfield, Pennsylvania.[4]
