David McSwain was born about 1700 on the Isle of Skye, Scotland. He married Margaret Etta Sargeant about 1723 in Isle of Skye, Scotland.

David and Margaret sailed to America in 1731 on the Snow Lowther from Isle of Skye, Scotland landing in Pennsylvania October 14, 1731. They had at least one son, William David McSwain, who was born on board during the trip.
Like many early pioneers seeking religious freedom and land, David and his family migrated down the Great Wagon Trail to North Carolina. He is the progenitor of the Southern McSwains.

David died 1770 in Cleveland, Rutherford, North Carolina Colony. He was buried at the McSwain Cemetery in Shelby, Cleveland County, North Carolina, USA[1]
