Biography

Birth and Parentage

Elizabeth Mede was the daughter of Sir John Mede, Knight, of Wenden Lofts, Essex and his wife, Dame Catharine Corbet. Elizabeth was remembered in the will of her father, who died in 1638,[1] and her sister, Anne, who died in 1639.

Marriages and Family

She married Thomas Wyndham, a widower, whose first wife had been Elizabeth Lytton. [2]

She had three children with Thomas:

After Thomas's death on 1 May 1653, Elizabeth remarried, three years later, to Richard Chamberline of Astley, Warwickshire, Esq. on 21 February 1657.

The National Archives hold a document relating to a 1667 case brought by plaintiff William Windham, Elizabeth's son by her first marriage to Thomas, against defendants: Dame Frances Wyndham, Sir John Holland baronet, Sir John Hobart baronet, Thomas Mede, Richard Chamberlaine and Elizabeth Chamberlaine his wife.[3]

A draft settlement between William, Richard and Elizabeth was also made in 1674. [4]

They had four daughters:

  • Mary
  • Martha
  • Katharine
  • Jane

all of whom survived except Jane, who died as an infant.

Their marriage lasted until 25 August 1675, when Richard died. Elizabeth had the following inscription made on his gravestone:

Here lyes below interrd ye body of Richard Chamberline Esq. Descended of ye Honourable Ancestors of that name, Borne at Astley-Castle in Warwickshire, Heyre to a fayer patrimony and proportion of ye gifts of Body Mind and Fortune, Marryed Elizabeth ye daughter of Sr John Mede of Lofts in Essex by whom he had Issue foure Daughters viz: Mary, Martha, Katharine & Jane, who all survive except ye last that departed this life in her Infancy, He dyed in ye Forteyth year of his age on ye 25th of August in ye year 1675, and his sorrowfull Relict, being of the same mold and fate with him yet neither wishing nor fearing Death, Erected this, both as a monument of her true love & constant memory of him & as a mark or Signature of her unfeined purpose in death, as in life, to repose herselfe in ye same bed with him, whence both together may rise hand in hand to ye fruition of ye same Glorious Hopes in Jesus Christ.
