Elizabeth Mede was the daughter of Sir John Mede, Knight, of Wenden Lofts, Essex and his wife, Dame Catharine Corbet.
Elizabeth was remembered in the will of her father, who died in 1638,[1] and her sister, Anne, who died in 1639.
Marriages and Family
She married Thomas Wyndham, a widower, whose first wife had been Elizabeth Lytton. [2]
After Thomas's death on 1 May 1653, Elizabeth remarried, three years later, to Richard Chamberline of Astley, Warwickshire, Esq. on 21 February 1657.
The National Archives hold a document relating to a 1667 case brought by plaintiff William Windham, Elizabeth's son by her first marriage to Thomas, against defendants: Dame Frances Wyndham, Sir John Holland baronet, Sir John Hobart baronet, Thomas Mede, Richard Chamberlaine and Elizabeth Chamberlaine his wife.[3]
A draft settlement between William, Richard and Elizabeth was also made in 1674. [4]
They had four daughters:
Mary
Martha
Katharine
Jane
all of whom survived except Jane, who died as an infant.
Their marriage lasted until 25 August 1675, when Richard died. Elizabeth had the following inscription made on his gravestone:
Here lyes below interrd ye body of Richard Chamberline Esq.
