Biography

Katherine Mehne was born on 5 November 1902 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her parents were German immigrants Christian Mehne and Alice (Annie) Fry.^[1]

She appears in the 1910 U.S. Census (age 7) living with her parents at 205 Felton Street, Philadelphia.^[2] Her father is said to be working as a Locomotive Machinist.

The 1920 U.S. Census shows Catherine Mehne working as a servant in the household of William S. McKenna at 235 Essex Avenue, Montgomery, Pennsylvania.^[3] Her parents and younger sister are enumerated elsewhere.

She married Samuel Thomas Freeth on 2 December 1924 in Drexel Hill.^[4] Their known children are:

• Samuel Frederick Freeth - (1924-2000)
• George Edward Freeth - (1925-2015)

Katherine and Sam "Freetle" appear together (ages 27 and 59 respectively) in the 1930 U.S. Census living at 3416 Brighton Avenue, Upper Darby, Pennsylvania.^[5] Also in the household are their children (Samuel F., age 6; George E., age 5) and Katherine's sister, Anna Mehne, age 23. By 1940, the marriage was over, and the next two census records show Catherine Freeth living alone with her two sons and working at a department store.^[6][7]

During the 1950s, she married her second husband, John J. Horan - (1900-1958).

She died on 1 February 1989,^[8] and is buried with her son at Arlington Cemetery in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania.^[9]
