Biography

Sarah, daughter of Wm (William) Melling and Annie Woods[1] was born in England about 1864. Sarah's birth was registered in the Oct-Nov-Dec quarter of 1864 in the Prescot district and her mother's maiden name was: Woods.[2] Sarah was baptized on 10 November 1864 in Sutton, Lancashire.[3] Their family lived in Wigan, Lancashire; her father worked as a foreman (engine fitter).[4][5]

She married Alfred Twist; their marriage was registered in the Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1886 in the Wigan district.[6][7] Their children were:

  • Annie Twist, birth registered in 1886[8][9]
  • William Pickard Twist, birth registered in 1888[10]
  • Alice Twist, birth registered in 1889[11]
  • (John) Alfred Henry Twist, birth registered in 1893[12][13][14]
  • Gladys Twist, birth registered in 1896.[15][16]

Their family lived at 77 & 79 Higher Parr St. in Parr, (Prescot registration district), Lancashire, England; Alfred was working as a grocer and baker.[17][18]

Alfred (age 32) died in 1896; his death was registered in the Oct-Nov-Dec quarter of 1896 in the Prescot district.[19]

Sarah gave birth to a son, Charles Jones Twist, his birth was registered in 1900; he may have been the son of future husband, Charles Edward Jones.[20][21][22] (see research notes)

In 1901, Sarah (age 34 and widowed) was living with her children in St Helens, Lancashire, near future husband, Charles.[23]

She migrated to Canada with her children in 1909.[24]

Sarah (age 40 and a widow) married Charles (age 30 and a bachelor) on 21 August 1909 in New Westminster, British Columbia.[1][25]

In 1911, their family was living in Vancouver, British Columbia.[24]

Sarah died (age 52) on 20 October 1918 in Vancouver, British Columbia.[26]

Charles Jones Twist, was born in England about Aug 1900 (after the death of Alfred Twist). It is possible that Charles Jones was the father. Charles and Sarah were living near each other but not married yet. In the 1911 census, son, Chas E Jones must have been Charles Jones Twist, now using the name of his father.
