William Samuel Melton, IV, son of William James Melton and Elizabeth O Pharr, was born in the Colony of Virginia in about 1729. He was a land owner and had slaves. He passed away in 1772. His will is filed in Albemarle County Will Book 2, pp. 278 & 279.
William, child of Wm Melton, was baptised on 23 November 1729 in St Mary Magdalene, Surrey, England.[1]
There are no sources at this time that give any information on a Middle Name. Middle names were considered rare until about the year 1780.
Farmer William and his brother Silas had slaves. William had 6 and Silas had 2. 1786 (& possibly 1782) tax rolls for Albemarle Co., VA. (From Ron Melton) Abt. birth place: Albemarle Co. was formed from Goochland and Louisa Counties and certain islands in the Fluvanna River (later known as James River) in 1744. (From Mike Melton's FTM homepage) Teri Popp lists John Melton, Jr. (b. 1747 in Albemarle Co., VA, d. Harrison, IN) as a child of William Melton. However, if Letitia White is mother & her birth date is correct, she would have only been 12 yr. old at the time.
See Historical Document.
Notes for William Samuel Melton, (IV):
I have seen William's birth location as Albemarle County, this is incorrect as Albemarle was not formed untill 1744.
ALBEMARLE - WAS FORMED IN 1744 from Goochland and Louisa, and certain islands in the "Fluvanna River" (later known as the James River).
