Biography

European Aristocracy
John Melton was a member of the aristocracy in England.

John Melton was the son of Sir John Melton and his wife Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Robert Hilton.[1][2] His date of birth is not known, but is estimated to be in the mid-1430s. He was possibly born at Aston, Yorkshire.[3]

He married Margery FitzHugh, daughter of Sir William FitzHugh, 4th Lord FitzHugh and Margery Willoughby.[4][1][2] They had one son, Sir John Melton.[1][2]

He possibly died on 23 April 1458.[citation needed] He is possibly the John Melton, esquire, whose inquisition post mortem was held at Yorkshire in 1457-8 (36 Henry VI).[5]

Research Notes

Date and place of birth: He is estimated to be born in the mid-1530s given that his father was born in about 1415. His family mostly lived in Yorkshire and were seated at the manor of Aston for several generations.[9]

Date of death: This has not been confirmed. Through a process of elimination, he is probably the John Melton, esquire, whose inquisition post mortem was held at Yorkshire in 1457-8 (36 Henry VI).[5] There was also an inquisitions held in 1474-5 (14 Edward IV) for a John Melton, knight,[10] but this is more likely to be his father.

Knighthood: No reliable source has been found to show he was knighted. The Visitation of Yorkshire[1] and Baronia Anglica Concentrata[2] both record him simply as "John Melton." The catalogue entry for the inquisition post mortem in 1457-8 describes the deceased as "Melton, John, esq: Yorks."
