James Mercer was born in Deptford, Kent, England, on 31 March 1814 and baptised at St Pauls church, Deptford on 1 May 1814, the son of Robert Mercer and Elizabeth Unknown. Robert was a shipwright and they lived in Dowling Street, Deptford [1] and [2]
