Biography
William Mercer was born about 1791 in Frederick, Virginia, United States.[1] He was the son of Joshua Mercer.[2]
William enlisted in the US Army on September 1, 1812. His record stated:[1]

- Physical: Height - 5’11 3/4”, Eyes - Dark, Hair - Sandy, Complexion - Fair
- Age: 23
- Occupation: Cooper
- Where born: Frederick, VA
- Enlistment: Sept 1 1812, Morganstown VA, Period: 18 months
- Notes: Capt. Jas. Paxton’s Co. Book 1812-1815. Drew Clothing April 8, Aug 1, Sept 5 & 20, Nov 1, Dec 17 1813. Jan 30 & Feb 9 1814. M.R. Feb 28 1814 present. Co. Book 23 Bk 562. Discharged at Burlington, March 1 or 3 1814. Term expired.
He married Sidney Wright on May 5, 1814.[2][3] They had one daughter, Phebe Ann Mercer, on February 11, 1815.
He died before September 1819 (when his widow remarried).
