Biography

Grace Mercer was born on 28 Jan 1892 in Great Harwood, Lancashire, England to Robert Mercer and Winifred (Gilbraith) Mercer. Her birth was registered in Blackburn, Lancashire in the first quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Gilbraith.^[1]

In 1901 Grace Mercer (age 9) lived at St Huberts Road in Great Harwood with her widowed mother Winifred (43, Cotton Winder) and five siblings: Thomas (19, Cotton Weaver), George (17, Cotton Weaver), Annice (16, Cotton Winder), Robert (13, Cotton Weaver), and Dora (11).^[2]

In 1911 Grace Mercer (age 19, Weaver Cotton) lived in Great Harwood with her mother Winifred (53) and three siblings: Thomas (29, Weaver Cotton), Robert (23, Weaver Cotton), and Dora (21, Weaver Cotton).^[3]

In 1921 Grace Mercer (age 29) lived in Great Harwood with her mother Winifred (64), sister Ann Mullany (37), and niece Mary Winifred Mullany (11).^[4]

Grace emigrated to the United States in 1925:

• Grace Mercer (age 33, Shop Assistant) sailed aboard the ship Carinthia, which departed from Liverpool on 26 Sep 1925 and arrived in New York on 5 Oct 1925 - her last permanent residence was Blackpool; her nearest relative whence she came was her mother Winifred Mercer of 79 Westcliff Drive in Blackpool; her final destination was New Bedford, Mass; she was going to join her brother Robert Mercer of 228 Eugenia St in New Bedford; she intented to remain in the US permanently; she was 5 feet 4 inches with a fair complexion, brown hair, and grey eyes; her birthplace was Gt Harwood.^[5]

In 1930 Grace Mercer (age 38, Servant Private Family) lived at 6 Irving Street in New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts with her employer Sarah H Snow (69), Sarah's daughter Edith Snow (38, Stenographer), and fellow servant Martha McCusker (53, Servant Private Family) - Grace had arrived in the US in 1926.^[6]

Grace married the widower Percy Howard Allsopp between 1933 and 1940.

In 1940 Grace Allsopp (age 42 [~48], Housekeeper Private Home) lived at 405 Cedar Grove St in New Bedford with her husband Percy (53, Painter Painting Firm), stepson-in-law Ernest Campos (40, Shearer Cotton Mill), stepdaughter Gladys Campos (29, Cloth Inspector Cotton Mill), and step-grandson Ernest Campos Jr (4).^[7]

In 1950 Grace Allsopp (age 58) lived at 405 Cedar Grove in New Bedford with her husband Bersey H (64).^[8]

Grace's husband passed away in 1981.

Grace Allsopp, born 28 Jan 1892, passed away in Jan 1986, aged 94 years, in Bristol County.^[9] She is buried at Pine Grove Cemetery in New Bedford with her husband.^[10]
