Biography

Susan was born in the United States, in the state of Ohio, in about 1812. She was married to John Allen on 25 March 1832 by Rev. John Goshen, in Muskingum County, Ohio.[1] This was probably done in the town of Putnam, Springfield Township, now part of Zanesville, as that was where John Goshen had set up his church.[2] She passed away 5 Dec 1893, probably in Illinois.

Parentage

The 1880 US Census says both her parents were born in New Jersey, United States. (Eliminates David Merriam Sr. (1760 - 1849), Slvister Merriam, and Joseph Merriam of Randolph, Portage, Ohio.

A Joseph Merriam was living in Muskingum, Ohio, in 1820 and appears to be her father. He also appears in the 1830 Census in Putnam, Muskingum, Ohio, as Joseph Morian. Susan would be married here in 1832 to John Allen making him even more likely to be her father. Susan was born 1812 or 1813 and sure enough, Joseph has 2 women of 15 to 20 years old living with him in the 1830 Census.
