Raymond Mertz was born on May 7, 1899 in Wellesley, Waterloo, Ontario to John Mertz (1861 - 1933) and Isabella Greenwood (1861-1935). He left Ontario and moved out West with his parents in about 1906 to an area south of Humboldt, Saskatchewan. His Dad took out a homestead in R. M. of Wolverine and Raymond helped him farm this land. In 1921 he was living with his parents on this same farm. He later went back East and worked as a factory worker.
