Richard was born in Shearsby, Leicestershire, England in 1812 and baptised there on 02 February 1812, the son of Richard and Catharine Messenger[1]. He was a farmer based in Shearsby.
In 1841 he was a farmer living in Church Street, Shearsby with sister Letitia, mother Catharine and two servants. His immediate neighbours were Thomas Smart and Ann Walker, farmer [2]. In June-July 1841 he was a member of the electorate of Shearsby in the General Election.
In 1851 he was still in Church Street, Shearsby [3].
He married Mary Alice Burdett (age 19) in 1857 in Shearsby [4]. Their children were:
In 1861 he was continuing to farm from Church Street, Shearsby [7]. He lived with his wife and children Charles H. (2) and Ellen J. (0) [8]. Also in the household were Thomas Waterfield (19) a carter from Shearsby and Mary Tomkinson (19) from Countesthorpe.
In the 1871 census, Richard (age 59), farmer and grazier of 44 acres, was the married head of household in North End, Shearsby [9].
In 1881 he was a farmer of 65 acres employing 2 men [10].
Richard's death (age 72) was registered in the Oct-Nov-Dec quarter of 1883 in the Lutterworth district of Leicestershire [11][12].
