Biography

1776 Project
Johannes Metzger served with Pennsylvania Militia during the American Revolution.

Military Service Revolutionary War.

1st Wife: aria Magdalene married about 1762 they had 5 children. She died 1771.

2nd Wife: Elsabeth Catarine Geres, 1752-1848 11 children

Johannes Metzger, a farmer, was born was born 1746 in Franconia Township, Philadelphia County (then) PA.

His parents had immigrated from Germany to the Philadelphia area in 1742.

As a young man, he married Maria Magdalene about 1762, and the couple settled on a farm in Springfield Township, Bucks County, PA where they had 5 children. Unfortunately, Maria died about 1771 (cause unknown), and Johannes subsequently married Elisabeth Catherina Geres in 1773, and they eventually had 11 children.

During the Revolutionary War, Johannes was formally naturalized by taking the Oath of Allegiance on June 1, 1777, and he later joined the Continental Army on October 1, 1881, serving in the local militia with the rank of Private 1st Class.

About 1787, Johannes Metzger sold his farm in Springfield Township and then acquired another farm located in Lower Smithfield Township, PA near the Delaware Water Gap.

After farming there for about 7 years, he became ill and died on November 9, 1794.

In his last will and testament, he asked that his burial be conducted with minimal trouble and expense, and his remains were interred at Fountain Hill Cemetery in Smithfield Township, just a few miles north of his farm.

His wife died in 1806, and the farm was later sold in 1813 with the proceeds being distributed equally among the 11 children from his second marriage.
