Obituary

January 6, 1916
Edson Boles METZGER was born in Pickaway county, Ohio, on September 17th, 1848, and died at his home near Ozawkie, Kansas, on December 31st, 1915, aged 67 years, 3 months and 14 days.
With his parents he came to Kansas in 1858.
In the year 1873 he was united in marriage with Sarah Ann TAYLOR; and to this union were born thirteen children.
He is survived by his companion, and nine sons and one daughter, Mrs. PRIDDY of Ozawkie; Charles and Harry of Oskaloosa; Walter, Arthur and Harvey of Valley Falls; Fred of Ozawkie, and Grover, Scott and Johnnie, who reside on the old home place; his brothers, Frank of Ozawkie and George of Golden Valley; and a sister, Mrs. BIGHAM of Topeka; and a host of other relatives and friends, who will miss his genial smile and citizenship.
He enlisted with his brother in the sixties and endured the hardships of a good soldier and received honorable discharge. :For about forty years he followed auctioneering; crying sales, far and near and often exposing himself to cold and storm to meet the demands the business made of him. He was considered on of the foremost in that line of work in his day.
He was County Commissioner of Jefferson County for a number of years and served as township trustee for a long time.
Mr. METZGER was a good father, a kind husband and his home seemed to be the most attractive place for all the members of the family even though they were scattered. It has been often remarked that there wasn't a family in all the community where there was more mutual interest and love manifested; in times of joy as well as when reverses came. He was interested in everything that was and the footprints he left behind will long be noticed. Though the end came suddenly, yet as he wished, many of the folks in the neighborhood will think of him as they come to town, and will miss his kindly face and genial inquiry into the welfare of the family. The members of the family and the relatives will have the sympathy of the whole community.
Funeral services were held in the U.B. church at Ozawkie Sunday, conducted by Rev. RANCH, He pastor, and Rev. G.M. HUFFMAN of Topeka, an old time acquaintance of the deceased.
