Biography

DEATH CLAIMS MRS. ELIZEBETH (Meyerdirk) FRIDAY HERE Sigourney, Iowa Mrs. Elizabeth Friday, aged 91 years and widow of G. Conrad Friday, died last Friday at the Kensler nursing home here. She had been a resident of Sigourney for 44 years. Mrs. Friday had been in failing health for several years following an operation for the removal of the appendix in July, 1940, when she was 87 years old. She was born in November 6, 1852 in Plank township, on a farm in the community known as Garibaldi and was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cort Meyerdirk. She spent her long life within six miles of the place where she was born. On November 15, 1882, she united in marriage to G.C. Friday in Sigourney. They lived on the Cort-Meyerdirk homestead in Plank township, now known as the Henry Spiess farm, until 1900, when they moved to Sigourney where they had built a new home at the east edge of town. Mr. Meyerdirk made his home with his daughter and Mr. Friday for 15 years, first on the farm and later in Sigourney. Mr. and Mrs. Friday became the parents of three sons. Mr. Friday preceded his wife in death on December 10, 1942. Surviving are three sons, Richard C. W. Friday, member of the Montana, Iowa and California bar, who came to Sigourney three weeks ago from California, called by his mother's illness; Earl F. Friday, with the Pioneering Engineering company of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Percy J. Friday, owner of "Friday's" in Ottumwa; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild and one sister, Mrs. Julia A. Wertz of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Preceding her in death were her parents, and four brothers; George Meyerdirk of Dickenson County; Irvin of Spencer; Cort of Pawnee, Oklahoma and Edward of Villard, Minnesota. Mr. Friday was a life-long member of the Methodist church; first uniting with the Sigourney Bethel church, and after moving to Sigourney, becoming a member of the church here. She attended services regularly when her health permitted. The funeral service was held on Sunday afternoon at Nimmer's funeral chapel, conducted by the Rev. W. J. Fowler, pastor of the Methodist church. Burial was made at West cemetery.
