Biography
Letta Lena "Lettie" Miller was born in 1863 to Samuel M. Miller and Martha Jane Arnold. Her parents passed away when Lettie was but a toddler. She lived with and was raised by her uncle, Jefferson Miller and her grandmother, Ann Miller. At age 17 she was living with and working for a family in the Jones County vicinity, Lettie married Addison Taylor Hakes in a ceremony by E. S. Paster with W. A. Paster and Ella Leonard as their witnesses. The two of them had 3 sons and 3 daughters, all born in Jones County. Lettie and Addison moved to Pocahontas County where the Hakes family had established businesses in the area becoming merchants and farmers as well as being strong builders of the town of Laurens. She dies unexpectedly in 1899 at age 36 leaving behind her six children aged 17 to 5 years.
