Biography

Birth

James's birthplace has been attributed in various genealogies to Scotland and to Charlestown. He apparently considered himself to have been born in Kirkwall, Fife, Scotland, as stated in his will, which was probated in Boston on 11 September 1753. Assuming that the will was probated shortly after his death, that makes him alive until age 93, unusual in those times but not impossible. Also unusually, he wills his entire estate to a friend who was "kind in my present stress", Capt. Thomas Mitchell, with no mention of any descendants.^[1]

Death

James appears to have died in Boston at age 90+, according to the will probated in 1753. Earlier speculations had him dying in 1690. and on Block Island, but no support for that location has been cited.
