Highland Recorder September 23, 1938 MRS. V. B. BISHOP DEAD
Mrs. Minnie Miller Bishop, one of Monterey’s most prominent and beloved women died Saturday evening at eight o’clock, after an illness of several weeks, following a paralytic stroke. She was a daughter of the late James Henderson Miller and Mrs. Harriet E. Craig Miller, and was born Aug. 10, 1860, at Beach Hill, Mason county, W.Va. In 1885 she was happily married to Virgil B. Bishop, who preceded her in death fourteen years ago. To this union five children were born, three of whom survive: Mrs. Bess Bishop Payne, of Monterey and Norfolk; Miller V. Bishop, Miami, Fla,; J. Henderson Bishop, Chicago. Sarah and Robert died in early life. Also surviving are two grandsons, George H. Payne, Jr., and John Miller Payne, one sister, Mrs. Samuel Couch, Raleigh, N. C., and two half-brothers, Dr. Joseph Miller, Thomas, W. Va. and Stephen Miller, Omaha, Neb. Immediately following her marriage Mrs. Bishop came to Monterey as a young bride and established a home. She at once became interested in the church and social life of the community, and this keen interest was manifested through the more than three score years and ten that were allotted unto her. The church and her home were her first love. Possessing a beautiful personality, she attracted and made many friends who sought her companionship and the hospitality of her home. A member of the Monterey Methodist church for many years, she gave unselfishly of her talents to the work. She was a teacher for a number of years in the church school, a post she held until failing health, just a few years ago, compelled her to give up this work; yet she did not lose interest and was vitally concerned about the welfare of the class of young women, whom she had instructed through the changing years. A charter member of the Woman’s Missionary Society, she had served it in many capacities and was president for a number of years. During the years of the World War she gave of her time and material things to the work of the Red Cross. Other worthwhile charitable institutions demanded her time and interest. She was a liberal contributor to the church and a faithful attendant upon its services until declining health denied this privilege by the infirmities of age. She died possessed of many of the virtues that go to make the full and complete life and one well worthy of emulation and the years allotted unto her, truly were not lived in vain. Funeral services were conducted from her late residence on Spruce Street, Tuesday morning at eleven o’clock by the Rev. J.H. Light assisted by Rev. A.E. Johnson, in the presence of a large assemblage of relatives and friends.
