John H. Miller was born about 1825.
He stood about 5 feet 8 1/2 inches (1.72m) tall with dark complexion and eyes and black hair when he enlisted with the famous 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry in 1863.
During the Civil War, he served as a Private in Company G of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the second regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was about 38 years old, married and working as a seaman when he enlisted from Allegheny City, Pennsylvania on 12 May 1863. He was wounded in July 1863, and killed in action on 20 February 1864 at the Battle of Olustee.[1]
