Biography

Born in Stromness, Orkney, Scotland on 9 November 1862[1], Alexander was the third child of Alexander MILLER and Margaret HALCRO.

His father worked in Canada for sixteen years during his children's childhood, as a blacksmith for the Hudsons Bay Company.

In both 1871 (aged 8, scholar) and 1881 (aged 18, baker)[2] he was living in Stromness with his mother and siblings. The 1911 Census tells us his mother had had 4 live births and three of those children were still living - as I have records of his three siblings after that date, I can only assume Alex died between 1881-1911. As I am unable to account for his death in Scotland, I do wonder if he followed his father and brother Andrew to undertake work in Canada?
