Biography

When Henry arrived in the United States in 1857 he was 30 years old. It is possible that Henry had a family before he immigrated and perhaps they died. Was this the reason he immigrated ? (Somewhere in an old record is the answer ) Henry may have served in the Civil War. When I was just a boy I saw a picture of an old man with a long white beard standing on crutches. I asked my Grandmother, Edna Bell Miller who is this? She said that he was your great grandfather and he fought in the Civil War. This prompted research into some Civil War records without any success. After the war Henry married Amanda Jackson who was born in Alabama. The search for a marriage record turned up nothing. Amanda had two children by a previous marriage, Leroy Calvin Jackson born 1860 and Sarah A. Jackson born 1862; the war left Amanda a widow. By using the census the marriage took place around 1865. The marriage of Henry and Amanda produced a total of six children. First was Elizabeth born in 1866, Margaret born in 1868, J. Miller, a girl born 1870, Eliza born 1873, H. A. Miller, a son born 1876, and Calvin Miller born in 1879.

In 1868 Henry purchased 161 acres of land from T. B. F. Whitten, this land was located in Neshoba County near the City of Philadelphia, Mississippi. Henry also owned another piece of land that appeared on the land roll index of 1892.

Amanda must have died sometime after the 1880 census. Because in March 1885, Henry married Amanda Hassie Whitmire who was born in Georgia September of 1848.

Henry and Hassie had two sons, Joseph (Jodie) Lee Miller born in December of 1886 and William (Willie) Miller born in July of 1889. Henry was 60 when his son Joseph was born.

Henry and his family by his second wife moved to Ellisville, Jones County Mississippi between 1892 and the school year of 1896.(The children are recorded in the school records of Ellisville). Henry age 74, Amanda H age 51, Joseph Lee age 13 and William age 10 appear on the census of 21 June 1900 living in Ellisville.

Henry was born in 1826. He passed away before 1910 Census

Research Notes:

Interesting clues about Henry Miller; on the 1900 Census for Ellisville, Jones County, MS he report he entered the United States in 1857. He also states his father and mother were born in Germany. he could read and write and speak English. It looks like the census taker wrote no in the column when asked if he was naturalize, On the 1880 Census he says his father was born in France and mother in Germany I found a record of Henry Muller who arrived in 1857 at the port of New Orleans, Louisiana. This record was in the Dubois County courthouse Jasper, Indiana. Did not follow up on this information. According to family lore Henry fought in the civil war. Found a H F Miller original file Co A 4th Regiment Mississippi Infantry. This was found in NARA Publication M232. Sent for information; received file on Henry T Miller Co. A 4th Mississippi Inf; could not connect with Henry F Miller. Could be recorded wrong on the index.

US and Canada, Passengers and Immigration Index, 1500's-1900's Henry Muller. Never checked on original record to see if this is My Henry; it seems researchers are using this as his arrival doc. I guess this is were the middle name came from?? Information provided in index: Henry Muller arrival 1857 in New Orleans, Louisiana On microfilm in Genealogy Div. of the Indiana State Library. Original is in the Dubois County Courthouse Jasper, Indiana

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Henry by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Henry:
