Samuel John Mills was the son of Rev. Samuel and Esther (Robbins) Mills, and grandson of John and Jane (Lewis) Mills. He was born 21 Apr 1783 in Connecticut.
He was one of the founders of the American Colonization Society along with Robert Finley.
He sailed from Philadelphia on November 1, 1817. Following a brief stay in England, Mills sailed to the west coast of Africa to purchase land for the American Colonization Society. He embarked for the United States on May 22 and died at sea. His funeral on board was conducted by Ebenezer Burgess.[1]
