Judith Ann Crandall of North Pole passed away on June 25, 2008, at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital. Judith slipped quietly into eternity after a sudden illness. Both family and friends will sorely miss Judy, and the one who misses her the most is her dog, Precious. Judy was born on April 21, 1942, at Fort Thomas, Ky., the oldest child of Elvin and Dorothy Milstead. Her father, Elvin, was in the military and Judy traveled throughout her childhood with her parents to various assignments. It was one of these military transfers that brought her to meet her future husband, Elmer Dee "Butch" Crandall. Judy and Butch were teenagers and they fell in love. They married on July 29, 1961. By then, Butch was also in the military and the two of them traveled to many parts of the world over a 28-year period. The military truly was her life, and Judy formed friendships in places like Japan; Puerto Rico; Hawaii; Annette Island; Alaska; Seattle; Riverside, Calif.; Kenagua, Ky.; Mount Clemens, Mich.; and Kodiak. Kodiak was Butch's last assignment in the military, where Judy lost her life's companion to cancer. Judy then moved to North Pole and resided there until her death. Judy was active in Eastern Star both in Kodiak and Fairbanks. She enjoyed crafts and was an avid and meticulous quilter. Many of the quilts she made will be treasured by the recipients both as art and for a memory of her life. During her working years, Judy did retail sales primarily with Sears and AAFES. She also raised three sons during these busy years. Judy was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer D. "Butch" Crandall of Kodiak; and her parents, Elvin and Dorothy Milstead of California. Judy is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Christopher and Kelly Dale of Monterrey, Calif., William E. and Christina Crandall of North Pole and Patrick Glen Roy and Tina Crandall of Enterprise, Ala.; grandsons, Christopher Crandall, Michael Moore and Kevin Ditty; granddaughter, Tabitha A. Calhoun; brother and sister-in-law, Glen Roy and Jan Milstead of Custer, Wash.; a myriad of nieces and nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, long-time friends and relatives. A funeral will be held at noon, Monday, July 7, at the Masonic Temple. Donations can be made to the family at 2716 Amberwood Court, North Pole, AK 99705. Arrangements were by Fairbanks Funeral Home and Crematory.
