Clearly the James Minty mentioned is not the father of William. Indeed they indicate he is the son. But the age and calculated date of birth are screwy if this is meant to be the son of William and Elizabeth, who was born in 1853 and would have been 18 when the census was taken. He could have been home at 18 but why was the age so much in error?. 1

From the Scotland's People website I downloaded today the image of the 1865 Valuation Roll in which William Minty is shown being a tenant at 13 South Street in Elgin Burgh, being a house and stable. He is shown as a Sheriff Officer and the valuation is £9 for the house and £4 for the stable, though the stable is shown as being vacant.
