Biography
John Mitchell was born in Ireland.
John was born about 1827.[1] He was the son of William Mitchell, farmer.[2]
On 11 Jun 1850, he(23) married Nancy Crooks, 21, dau. of Robert Crooks, Farmer, of Claggan, Lissan, County Londonderry. At the time his residence was Ballynagally, Lissan, County Tyrone. [2]
His daughter Maggie lived at Dunmore as of her marriage in 1896.
As of 1901 he lived at Dunmore with son David & his wife Annie.
He attended the funeral of his sister-in-law Eleanor (Hartley) Mitchell (abt.1824-1901).
He passed away 23 July 1909 "age 83" at Dunmore. [3] He was recorded as a farmer on the death record, although he had been a Stonemason in the 1901 census.
He was interred in the family burying-ground ,Claggan. The chief mourners were: [4]

Relationships among children
- Esther and Maggie Ann are sisters, as Maggie's husband James Bell is listed as brother-in-law on Esther's husband's obituary.
- David's wife's obituary cites David Bell as an Uncle, with cousins Robert, William, Thomas J. and Annie Bell. This matches Esther's family.
- Son James's will names as nephew James Alexander Lindsay Mitchell , whose birth record show Alexander Mitchell as father, meaning Alexander must be a son of John.
Other notes
There was also John Mitchell of Drumlea of similar age . He was the executor of Robert Crooks' will, and the father-in-law of Nancy's sister Martha. It seems from context that John of Drumlea had moved to the Dunmore area.
