Biography

Lillie C. M. Mitchell was born March 23, 1872 (or 1870 per her death certificate) in Potosi, Washington County, Missouri to John Israel Mitchell and Verna Margaret Small.[1][2][3]

Lillie married John C. Amelung on 10 Apr 1888 in Pilot Knob, Iron County, Missouri. She was under age and her mother had to give her permission.[4]

Lillie was confirmed in the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Pilot Knob on July 15, 1894, the same day as Mary (Schlueter) Amelung, her sister-in-law.[2]

By March 1922 (just two months after her mother passed away), Lillie left her husband, John Amelung, and moved to St. Louis with her older children. She left Fred, Grace, and Hattie with John.[5] By 1927 they lived at 5832 S. Compton Avenue and she was listed in the 1927 city directory as the widow of John C. Amelung. She does not show up after 1928 nor before 1927. Lillie was not a Widow as John Amelung did not pass away until 1966 at age 100.

Lillie had 7 children by John C. Amelung:

  1. Christian "Chris" Johann Amelung
  2. Clarence Martin Edgar Amelung
  3. Roy Charles Amelung, Sr.
  4. George Johann Heinrich Amelung
  5. Fredricke "Fred" Wilhelm Charles Amelung
  6. Grace Louise Henrietta (Amelung) Klunk
  7. Hattie M. Amelung

Lillie married, as her second husband, William Addison Hamil, circa 1929 in Saint Louis, St Louis City, Missouri and is listed as his wife on the 1930 census.[6]

Lillie Hamil died on 16 Mar 1957 in Saint Louis, St Louis City, Missouri, and was buried in the Sunset Memorial Park and Mausoleum, Affton, St. Louis County, Missouri.[1][7][3]

My dad would always tell me that they hated having to go over to John & Lillie's house because she was always mean to them. His mom would send something over to Lillie and the kids were the messengers.
