James Mizell Sr. was born about 1727-30 in the Chowan Precinct. Married first to Eleanor(?). James Mizell married Sarah King on January 18, 1769, in Tyrrell Co., N. C. [1] They had 7 children together.

On December 5, 1752, James Meazell served on a Tyrrell County, North Carolina jury. James Meazile on September 1, 1753 witnessed a deed where Luke Meizell sold 135 acres to Samuel Smithwick. This was James’ brother.

James Mizell was listed on the 1755 tax list of Tyrrell County, North Carolina. On March 5, 1758, James Mizell, of Tyrrell County received a gift of 620 acres from his father William Mizell, planter of Tyrrell County, located in Tyrrell County. On February 1, 1761, James Mizell of Tyrrell County signed a deed where he sold 145 acres for 81 lbs. to John Bennett.James purchased on February 7, 1761 125 acres for 30 lbs. from Josiah Hendrick, located on the east side of Smithwick’s Creek, in Martin County.John Mizell witnessed the deed.

James Mizell sold 475 acres in Tyrrell County July 2, 1761 to William Ross for 25 lbs.He signed this deed also. No wife signed either of these deeds.[2] He moved to Pitt County, North Carolina at this point, where he was living with his brother William in 1762. He was gone in 1763 from Pitt County. James probably moved back to Tyrrell County as on June 1, 1763, a James Mizell witnessed a deed there.[3]

Upon his apparent return to Tyrrell County, on November 23, 1763, James Mizell purchased 250 acres for 20 lbs. from James Leggett, Sr. of Bertie County, located in Tyrrell County on the south side of Deep Run.James Mizell married on January 18, 1769 to Sarah King in Tyrrell County.Luke Mizell IV, son of William and Elenor Mizell, served as bondsman.James Mizell sold 200 acres for 60 lbs. to William Ross in Tyrrell County, North Carolina on January 8, 1773.Ross is the man who purchased 475 acres from James in 1761.This land adjoined Cain’s line.James’ land holdings were in the newly created Martin County as of 1774.James Mizell Sr. was listed in the 1779 Martin County tax list.James owed 868 lbs. in taxes that year, living in District #1.

Descendants of Jesse Mizell (1765-1827) have a tradition that his father, alternately known as either Jesse Mizell Sr. or James Mizell, served in the American Revolution at Savannah, Georgia under Francis Marion and a General Jasper.Historyshows that at the battle of Savannah in October 1779, Col. Francis Marion’s 2nd S.C. Regiment played a major part.Sgt. William Jasper of the 2nd S.C. was killed as he planted the American flag on the ramparts there.Although this tends to give credence to the family stories, a search of the muster rolls of the 2nd S.C. shows no Mizell on it.However, James Mizell’s widow did receive a pension later for his service so sufficient proof must have been given.

In the 1787 State census, James Mizell was living in District #5 of Martin County. He owned no slaves. He was aged 21-60 years old.The 1790 census of Martin County lists James Mizell Senr aged over 60 years old.He had no wife but had four males aged under 16 in his home.
In 1804, James Mizell Sr. deeded property to his daughter-in-law Milley Mizell, which would then go to his granddaughters Charlot Mizell and Peggy Mizell after Milley’s death.Mark Mizell and Durant Mizell witnessed the deed.On September 3, 1804, James Mizell gave to his son Durant Mizell 100 acres.Mark Mizell witnessed the deed.James Mizell Sr. probably died shortly after this transaction. The widow of James Meezle or Mizell, who was a private in the American Revolution, received a pension for her husband’s service on October 24, 1814, of $4 a month.[4]
