Arlen, nickname Cosmo and Coz, was born Aug 25, 1941 in Martin County, NC, USA to John Allen Mizell and Elizabeth "Bessie" Myrle Walker.[1]
They lived in Williamston, Martin, NC in 1950 on HWY 64 East. Dad, 34, and Mom, 29, owned a grocery store where Dad worked a 65 hour week.[2]
Arlen attended Williamston High school and then East Carolina College in Greenville, NC.[3] He obtained a degree in Education with a minor in Psychology. While attending East Carolina he played football, baseball and joined the Theta Chi Fraternity.[4]
Arlen moved to Apopka, Florida in 1965.
Arlen married Brenda Joyce Woodis 18 Nov 1967 in Apopka, FL, USA.[5]
They reared two daughters, Stacy and Laura, in Apopka.
Mr. and Mrs. Boyd Woodis announce the final plans for the wedding of their daughter, Brenda Joyce, to Arlen Eugene Mizell, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Allen Mizell, Williamston, N.C.
The wedding will take place Saturday in the Presbyterian Church of Apopka. All friends of the couple and family are cordially invited to attend.[6]
Before marrying, he began his teaching career at Apopka Memorial High School teaching Earth Science and Physics first, coached football and taught Physical Education.
Arlen then moved to teaching Marketing and starting the Distributed Education Clubs of America program (DECA). He was a board member with Florida DECA while teaching and after retiring became the Chairman of the Board. Arlen was a dedicated teacher and mentor to his students for 38 years in Apopka High School, retiring in 2003. He also taught evening classes with Valencia Community College. [7]
Coz was known throughout the area as a great caterer and cook for charity events. He was at every event cooking and then filling plates will his delicious food. He did this for decades for all of the charities he was involved in the central Florida area.[8]
Arlen understood the importance of family and giving back to his world. He helped found the Apopka Jaycees and was president at times over the years. Arlen was a big member and founding member of the Apopka Foliage SerToMa Club. He was also in the Apopka Elks Lodge #2422 and a Life Member of the Apopka VFW.[9][10][11]
He was awarded the 4th Annual John H. Land Apopka Humanitarian Award in November 2022.[12]
He served as elder and a trustee the First Presbyterian Church of Apopka. He feed the community needy on Fridays. Arlen urged other churches to help with the feeding more often during the other weekdays.
He has a family foundation that supports cancer patients.[13]
He died Feb 3, 2023 after 55 years of marriage to Brenda. His services were held at First Presbyterian Church of Apopka Feb 16.
