Mary Moore was born about 1767. Most likely in Augusta County, Virginia, the daughter of Thomas Moore and sister of John Moore. She married Anthony Amend (Amand) in 1791 In Shenandoah County, with a marriage bond posted and signed by John Moore, her brother. She moved with her husband to Monongalia County, Virginia where they purchased land in December of 1796. They sold the land in 1800. Three children were born in these years. They then moved to Wayne Township, Columbiana, Ohio by 1805 where they resided until 1840, whereafter she passed away before 1844.

Mary's name has been spelled in records as Moore, Mohr, and Moor. The Mohr spelling was possibly the result of her German brother-in-law's writing of the bond confirmation which she signed with a mark. The Moor spelling appears in the same document with the official recording of the marriage as Moore. The bond was filed in the name of John Moore, most likely her brother.

The middle name has been reported as Ann or Elizabeth in different proposed genealogies but there is no known source that confirms these. From the land deeds it appears she did go by the nickname, Polly.

Her birthplace was likely Augusta County, Virginia but no birth record has so far been found. Augusta County was split into two counties in 1778 with the northern half becoming Rockingham County which neighbored Shenandoah County. The Moore family records are in these areas with births in Augusta and deaths in Rockingham, but essentially the same place, with marriages recorded in Shenandoah.

  • Mary Moore seems most likely the daughter of Thomas Moore of Rockingham and sister of John Moore, due to proximity and number of match points of records. However, this could be subject to closer research. There was another Thomas Moore in Loudoun County, Virginia, though so far no record of a John Moore there.

Previous notes

Please do not add sources relating to Mary Anne Moore who died in Kentucky. One line of Aments did remove to Kentucky. That line descended from Maria Appolonia. The line that used the surname Amend did not live in Kentucky.

The biographer of the Amend line, Alan Amend and his co-researcher determined her name may have been Mohr.

Note from her descendant. I have been looking for documents for these ancestors for over 30 yrs and I’ve found nothing to establish the claim her name was Mohr other than anecdotal family contributions.

However I have eliminated the purported spouse Mary Ann Moore. That Mary was the daughter of a well documented Colonel Isham Moore of Manchester South Carolina. He was married in abt 1771 to Nancy Ann Singleton. He resided in South Carolina his entire life.

His daughter Mary Ann was born abt 1769-1779 and was the wife of Anthony Butler also of Manchester. This Mary Ann was also known as Mary Ann James Moore as seen in her South Carolina Marriage to Butler in 1799 she died young, at about age 23. She did not live in proximity to the Amend family in Columbiana Ohio. The Mary who married Anthony like was the daughter of a recent German immigrant and undoubtedly spoke German.
