Biography

Alessina di Montferrato, was the elder or only daughter of Bonifazio II, Marchese di Montferrato, and his wife Marguerite de Savoie.[1]

Her birth date is unknown, but as she was described as a child (inpuberem) in the will of her father dated 12 June 1253,[1] a birth date of circa 1248 is possible, particularly as her mother was born about 1224 to 1228.[1] The will is the first document where she is mentioned.[2]

First marriage and children

She was betrothed on 6 October 1262 to Albrecht I, Herzog von Braunschweig und Luneburg, as his second wife,[1] but the marriage didn't take place until 1 November 1266 and in Kenilworth in England.[1]; [2]

They had seven children[2]

  1. Heinrich I, born 1267, probably in August, succeeded in Grubenhagen;
  2. Albrecht II, born circa 1268, succeded in Gottingen;
  3. Wilhelm I, born circa 1270, succeeded in Wolfenbuttel;
  4. Otto, born 1271;
  5. Konrad, born circa 1272;
  6. Luder, born circa 1275
  7. Mechtild, born circa 1276.

Albrecht died in Braunschweig on 15 August 1279.[2]

Second marriage

Alessina married in 1282, Gerhard I, Graf von Holstein-Schaeunburg in Itzehoe,[2] again as his second wife. There were no children from this marriage.

Alessina died in February 1285. Sources vary as to whether it was the 4 or 5 February[2] or 6 February.[1]

Suggested LNAB: Aleramici

Von Montferrat-1 and Monferrato-2 appear to represent the same person because: Both represent Alessia di Monferrato, wife of Albrecht I duke of Brunswick.
