Edward Vaughan Montagu, b. 23 January 1851, baptized 16 February 1851 at St John the Evangelist, Cape Town, Resident at Papendorp, Clerk in the Colonial Office, witnesses Henry Douglas, Fanny Isabella Piers, performed by D F Childe, He married 3 August 1876 to Annie Dorothy Thompson, daughter of the above, Francis Robert “Matabele” Thompson, he died 1945, from Pneumonia and is buried in Barkley West.
As Edward Vaughan Montagu’s parent both died young (before 30 years of age) Edward was taken in by Francis Robert ‘Matabele” Thompson and brought up by them, Francis was a farmer and Politician and close associate of Rhodes, he was born at sea near Port Elizabeth in 1857, at age 13 he was a diamond digger near Barkley West, at age 17 he started farming at ‘Cornforth Hill’ in Griqualand West and was an accomplished linguist, he held a position in the Warren Expedition and in 1884 became secretary and advisor to Rhodes.
Edward was born in 1851. He is the son of John Montagu and Anna Piers.
