John Montgomery is a part of US Black heritage.

John Henry Montgomery was born about 1835 in Queen Anne's County, Maryland. He served with the famous 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War.

He stood about 5 feet and 6 inches (1.68m) tall with dark skin, brown eyes, and black hair when he enlisted in 1863.

Military Service

During the Civil War, he served as a Private in Company I of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the second[1] regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was about 28 years old, married and working as a laborer when he enlisted on 22 April 1863 from Hillsboro, Maryland. He was wounded in action on 18 July 1863 at the Second Battle of Fort Wagner. Mustered out 20 August 1865 with his regiment.[2]
