Nathaniel was born about 1779 per census records. He was first married in Orange County, Virginia in 1800 to Sally Adams, a daughter of John Adams.[1]
Nathaniel and his brothers James, William and John Moore migrated from Orange County, Virginia to Fayette County, Kentucky. He was there recorded as again marrying to Sallie Jenkins in 1811.[2]
Nathaniel's will was dated 13 Aug 1852, a codicil was dated 12 May 1855, and it was proved 16 Feb 1859. He named his widow Lucy Ann Moore. Nathaniel is recorded as having married Lucy Ann Webster on July 30, 1851[3] Nathaniel would have been quite her elder. The death of Nathaniel's wife, Sallie E. Moore, who appeared in the 1850 census, is not known but she clearly had died prior to July of 1851.
The 1859 surveyors map of the division of Nathaniel Moore's land clearly shows Lucy Ann Moore as receiving lot #4 marked "dower" with the home of Nathaniel Moore per his will.[4] A 2 September 1858 Woodford County, Kentucky marriage record indicates Nathaniel Moore, aged 78 years, had married to Sarah Chilton.[5] It appears his wife Lucy had died but he had failed to update his will prior to his 13 February 1859 death. This is supported by a Commissioner's Deed record naming his widow Sallie Moore and by the 1860 census showing a Sallie Moore residing amongst the Moore family on Nathaniel's land with her apparent sisters named Chilton.
Nathaniel's children by his first two marriages were:
John "Jack" Moore
Nathaniel Moore, Jr.
Polly, dec'd, m. James Sallee, ch: William, James, Jackson, Joseph, David, & Mary, wife of Thos. Clemmons, dec'd.
Peggy, m. Daniel Sallee (had m. Wm. Gribbons by Est. division)
Nancy, m. Joseph Sallee
Sally, m. Wm Kirkpatrick
Patsy, m. Bright Self
Betsy, m. Wm. Halligan

A deed wherein Commissioner Geo. Kincaid, appointed on the petition of Sally Moore, widow & of John Moore, Nathaniel Moore, Jr., Joseph Sallee, Nancy his wife, P. Gribbons and Peggy his wife, Wm Kirkpatrick and Sally his wife, Bright Self and Patsy his wife, Wm. Halligan and Betsy his wife, divisees of Nathaniel Moore, deceased to divide the land of said Moore, of the first part and Nancy Sallee, one of the daughters of said Nathaniel and wife of Joseph Sallee, for $1. It mentions 107 1/4 acres and that of this, 3 1/2 acres is being sold to Nancy and Joseph.
Nathaniel Moore 2 Sept 1858 marriage, at 78 years of age, to Sarah Chelton 67, of Woodford County, KY. Daughter of Stephen Chelton. She appears to have been residing among Nathaniel's family during the 1860 census. Is it possible the dower lot was laid off to Lucy Ann Moore because Nathaniel had not updated his will since remarrying??
