Biography

William Y. (possibly Young) Moore was born about 1846 in Kentucky, according to his earliest census records. His father was Isaac Moore and his mother was Mary.

In the 1860 census, William (age 14) was enumerated in his father's household in District 1, Hardin, Kentucky. His father, Isaac, was a farmer. William had three siblings, Mary, Alfred, and Catharine, who were enumerated in the 1860 census as "Deaf & Dumb," so there may have been a hereditary condition in the family.^[1]

William was listed in a military record for the U.S. Army.^[2] William served during the Civil War, with his records showing he served in "K 6 KY. Cav.; and H 24 KY. Infantry."^[3]

In the 1870 census, William (age 22) was enumerated in his father's household in London, Laurel, Kentucky.^[4]

On 16 February 1871, William married Mary C. Phenix in Livingston, Kentucky.^[5]

In the 1880 census, William (age 33), working as a Bridge Watchman, was enumerated with his wife and children in New River, Scott, Tennessee, United States. The census taker made a note that William had a disability with his leg, but gave no further detail. A 19 year old female servant and two young adult men boarding with the family were also present in the household.^[6]
