John was born in 1943 at Huntly Hospital in Huntly, New Zealand.[1] His parents were Robert Peter and Moyae Ella Winifred (née Walker) Moorfield.[1][2] As a boy, he was educated at St. Stephen's School, a Māori boarding school in the Auckland region, despite being of European descent. While attending St. Stephen's, he became interested in the Māori language (te reo Māori).[3]
After studying to be a teacher, John originally had to teach geography and social studies due to a lack of te reo teaching positions. However, he was later able to gain a position teaching the language at Waikato University. He also later taught at Otago University and the Auckland University of Technology. As well as teaching the Māori language, he developed numerous learning resources for it, becoming a major figure in the revitalization of the language.[3]
John passed away in 2018 after a long illness.[2]
