Henry “Harry” Morgan’s birth registration, an copy of which is included in this profile's images indicates that he was born on November 06, 1863 in Mere, Wiltshire, England[1] to Henry Morgan and Mary Cowley. In 1871 he was living with his parents in Mere[2], however there is evidence that the 9 year old Henry left his parents in 1872 and boarded the S.S. Sarmatian (Allen Line) with his Uncle John Cowley to journey to Canada.[3]. He is certainly missing from the passenger list of the Morgan family in 1874 when they made their way to Canada[4]. The following year, Henry was joined by the rest of his family in Toronto.
Training of a Future Hotel Owner
Henry shows up in the 1881 census living with his parents and siblings and working as a waiter[5].
The Toronto Directory for 1883,[6] shows Henry working as a bartender for the Jewell and Clow Restaurant (Frederick Jewell and William Clow, proprietors) at 56-60 Colborne St in Toronto, where he was also boarding. The Toronto Directory for 1885[7] shows Henry is still a bartender and boarding at the same restaurant at 56-60 Colborne Street, however it appears that Mr Jewell has left the business which is now known at the William Clow Restaurant.
The Toronto City Directory for 1887[8] shows Frederick Jewell has become the proprietor of a restaurant at 10 Jordan Street in Toronto. This restaurant, previously know as the "Merchants’ Restaurant" under the proprietorship of a Max Jung, is renamed by Frederick, "The Jewell Restaurant.” Frederick Jewell brings Henry over as his bartender. Henry also now boards at 10 Jordan.
Marriage
On Nov 15, 1887 Henry married Lille Soul, daughter of William Soul and Annie Freeman. The ceremony was performed by licence by B.D. Thomas. The witnesses were his brother, James Morgan and Emily Freedom [sic] both of Toronto, Ontario[9]
The Entrepreneur
Old Toronto telephone books show that Henry became the proprietor of ‘’The Merchant’s Restaurant’’ in downtown Toronto sometime before September 1890[10]. This is confirmed by an ad in The Toronto City Directory for 1889[11] which proclaims Henry Morgan to be the successor to F. Jewell as the proprietor of the Jewell Restaurant. According to the same directory Henry is now living at 34 Nassau Street in Toronto. By 1891 Henry has changed the name of the restaurant back to "’The Merchants’ Restaurant"[12] and by 1901 has changed it again to "The Merchants' Hotel."[13]
Grooming the Successor
According to various Toronto City Directories, Henry's brother James is listed as a barkeeper at the restaurant in 1895[14], being promoted to clerk in 1897[15] and manager in 1898[16]. This state of affairs continues until sometime between November 1907 and May 1908 when the Toronto telephone books show a change of owner ship from Henry to James”[10].
Retirement & Death
After leaving the restaurant, Henry then apparently retired in the east end of Toronto at 2362 Queen St. East, then in 1913 at 104 Rainsford Road.[10][17].
Henry died on March 4, 1919 at 14 Columbine Ave, Toronto. The cause of death is listed as Hemorrhage of Lungs over a four-day period caused by Arteris sclerosis which he had suffered from “for a few years” [18].
Henry is buried in St. John’s Norway cemetery, 256 Kingston Rd, Toronto, Ontario.[19][20].[21]
