Biography

Nov. 18, 1930-June 13, 2016 James Thomas Morgan, M.D. age 85 of Graysville, AL passed away peacefully from this earthly life on June 13, 2016 following a brief illness. He was known as "J.T." by family, friends and colleagues, and simply as "Doctor" by the many patients he served during his long medical career. He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Mary Sue Largin Morgan; children, Jim (Vickie), Janet Garrison (David), Ann Cruit, Jay Morgan (Susan) and Roger Largin (Susie), all of Birmingham. In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by his brother Frank J. Morgan, Jr. M.D. of Jackson MS. J.T. is also survived by grandchildren, Justin White (Aubrey), Joby White (Kacey), Krista Lutz (Stephen), Morgan Cruit and Madison, Will and Claire Largin; and by many great grandchildren, nephews, nieces and devoted friend, John Ganey. J.T. was preceded in death by his parents, Frank J. and Christine Hobgood Morgan; by his sister, Sarah Nell Beckham; and by the mother of his children, Ann Downey Morgan. J.T. was born in Marion, Mississippi on November 18, 1930. He graduated from Meridian High School, and at the age of sixteen, enrolled at the University of Mississippi, where he received both his Bachelors and Masters degrees. He was R.O.T.C. battalion commander and was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity. He attended medical school at Ole Miss for two years, and then completed his medical degree at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. He completed an internship at the John Gaston Hospital in Memphis, TN and then began the practice of medicine in Noxapater, MS. In 1959 J.T. moved his medical practice to Graysville, AL and in 1964 he established Longview General Hospital which he operated for many years. In addition to his medical practice, J.T. purchased and operated Spearman Cattle Feeders, Inc. in Spearman, TX from 1986 until his "semi-retirement". J.T. was a member of the Jefferson County Medical Association, the Texas Cattle Feeders Association, the Ole Miss Alumni Association and The Club of Birmingham, AL. The family would like to give special thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff of the UAB Palliative and Comfort Care Unit for their excellent care as J.T. prepared to transition from this life. A visitation will be held on Thursday June 16, 2016 from 11 am until 1 pm at New Beginnings Baptist Church in Graysville, followed by funeral services at 1 pm. Graveside services will be held at Magnolia Cemetery in Meridian, MS on Friday June 17, 2016 at 2:00 pm.
