Biography

James Morgan served in the North Carolina Militia in the War of 1812
Service started: Nov 24, 1814
Unit(s):
Service ended: Mar 9, 1815

James Morgan was born ca 1788[1] in North Carolina.[2]

James married Elizabeth "Coleman" ca 1808 in Wilkes Co., NC.[1]

In 1850,[2] 1860,[3] and 1870,[4] they lived in Rabun Co., GA.

James served under Capt. Ambrose Carlton[5] in the 5th Regiment,[5] North Carolina Militia during the War of 1812 from 24 November 1814 to 8 December 1814 and again from 15 February to 5 March 1815.[1] The 5th Regt. was mustered out of Wilkes Co., NC.[5] James applied for a pension based on his service in Habersham Co., GA, on 24 August 1871 as a resident of Rabun County.[1]

Children

James and Elizabeth are believed to have had several children together, including:

  1. Elizabeth (Morgan) Fletcher (b. ca 1814 NC)
  2. Polly Morgan (b. ca 1815 NC)
  3. Martin Morgan (b. 1820 NC)
  4. Dicy (Morgan) Jennings (b. ca 1825 NC)
  5. Jane (Morgan) Fletcher (b. 1825 NC)
  6. Beverly Morgan (b. ca 1826 NC)

Polly and Beverly lived with James and Elizabeth in 1850.[2] Elizabeth, Dicy, and Martin were married within days of each other in February 1848 in Rabun Co., GA, and Elizabeth and Martin lived next to each other in 1850. Jane married James Fletcher, who is believed to have been a brother to her sister Elizabeth's husband Joseph Hial Fletcher.

James Morgan's pension application, based on service during the War of 1812, mentions that a "James Morgan Jr." also served in the same unit for the same dates as this James Morgan. James Jr. may have been another son, or there could no relation, as "Jr." was often used to designate men of different ages, not necessarily to denote a familial relationship.

Clearly James and Elizabeth had other children, given the gaps in dates between their approximate date of marriage and the births of their putative children.

Research Notes

James gave his wife's LNAB as "Elizabeth Coleman" in his War of 1812 pension application.[1] Many researchers have stated that her LNAB was "Carter," though no source or proof argument has been given to confirm that surname.
