James was born on the 15th September 1817 at East Woodlands, Frome Selwood, Somerset, England and baptised on the 24th May 1820 at St. John, Frome Selwood, Somerset, England, the son of James Morgan (yeoman) and Harriot Morgan of East Woodlands[1].
On the 10th August 1840, James married Fanny Clarke at St. John, Frome Selwood, Somerset, England. James Morgan, bachelor, labourer of East Woodlands, son of James Morgan (labourer) and Fanny Clarke, spinster of Mount, daughter of Peter Clarke (labourer). Witnessed by Stephen ?eat & Hannah Clarke[2]
James was an agricultural labourer until 1851 when he became a coal haulier and a farmer.
In 1860, James inherited his father's farming business and permission to either sell the growing crops or to harvest them. James auctioned his father's possessions to clear any outstanding debts as per his father's will, with the remainder to be split between his siblings and his niece and nephew, the children of his deceased sister Ann.[3]
James continued farming 60 acres of land, as well as running the George Inn at Lower Woodlands, Marston, Frome, but down sized to 10 acres between 1871 and 1881 and was a hay dealer by the time of his death[4].
He passed away aged 65 years on the 29th June 1883[5] at Blatchbridge, Somerset, England[4].
Probate was proved on the 31st July 1883 at Wells, Somerset by Charles Harding, Auctioneer and Percy Wilson Daniel Cruttwell, Solicitor[4].
