DEATH. MORLAND.—On the 28th inst., at Bombay, Captain Sir Henry Morland, K.C.M.G., late of the Indian navy, in his 55th year. (By cable.)
OBITUARY. The late Sir Henry Moreland, who died at Bombay on the 28th July, was a man well respected in the community in which he resided, and his name will be familiar to many Australians as the husband of Miss Fanny Carandini, who with the other members of her family made a triumphal march through Australia many years ago.
It was while visiting India that Miss Carandini and the then Mr. Henry Morland married, and the honors which have been given him by the Sovereign have been bestowed since.
Sir Henry Morland was related to the Earl of Bective, in Westmoreland, and joined the service of the late Indian navy in 1852 as a midshipman, rising eventually to the position of lieutenant. The navy was abolished in 1863, and Lieutenant Morland then joined the Indian Marine, and filled various offices, until at the time of his death he was Port Officer, Registrar of Shipping and President of the Marine Board of Examiners.
During his naval career he saw active service and performed many meritorious deeds. He was employed in the blockades of Berbera and the Somali coast of Africa, and of the Shugra and Fonthall ports in Arabia in 1853. He took part in the bombardment of Jeddah in 1857, and in the following year he assisted in the naval operations for the suppression of the Wagher rising in Okhamandel. In 1862, when he was lieutenant of the Semiramis, he was one of an expedition sent out to punish tho murderers of a number of men from H.M.S. Penguin.
When the Abyssinian expedition was despatched in 1867 Mr. Morland superintended the equipment, despatch and discharge of upwards of 200 ships from India, so that it will be seen his naval knowledge was appreciated. In 1887 he was deputed to England to present to the Queen the jubilee address from the citizens of Bombay, and he was knighted on that occasion.
