He entered the South Australian public service in 1873 as Parliamentary Librarian, and thereafter filled numerous offices in both Bouses of Parliament. In 1900 be was appointed Clerk of the House of Assembly, and remained in that position until 1918, when he succeeded the late Mr. Frederick Halcomb as Clerk of Parliaments. He retired in 1920 after 47 years of continuous service.[1]
He married Mary Frances Sanders on 11 March 1875 at the Unitarian Christian Church in Adelaide, South Australia.[4]
John died on 4 June 1936 at Unley, Adelaide, South Australia.[1][5] His remains were interred at St Judes Anglican Cemetery in Brighton, South Australia.
