Biography

Oswald Mosley; Barrister/Lawyer was born in 1583 a son of Anthonie Mosley and Alice Webster, at The M[ln]llngate - Ancoats Manchester, England.

Baptism

Oswald was baptized on April 26, 1583, at the Collegiate Church of St Mary, St Denys and St George, Manchester, Lancashire, England. The heading "Christening in Apri[l]le 1583" of the baptismal record reads, "26 Oswald sonne of Anthony Mosleye" [1], pp. 13, 16;[2]

Education

On October 14, 1597, at the age of 14, Oswald matriculated from Braesnose College, Oxford University, Oxford, England. The record in the annals of the university states that he was the son of an Oswald Mosley [Anthony]. He was a student of Gray's Inn 1598 recorded "of Manchester".

Marriage

On September 22, 1602, Oswald married Anne Lowe at St. Mary's, Stockport, Cheshire, England (see Familysearch and [1], p. 16).

Oswald and his family lived at Ancoats from 1608 until his death in 1630. He was variously; Constable of Manchester (1609-10), Mayor of Stockport (1611), High Constable of the Hundred of Stockport (1612), and steward of the court leet of the Manor of Manchester from 1613 or 1616 [3]

Death

Oswald passed away on November 9, 1630, at Ancoats, Manchester, Lancashire, England; and his will dated October 22, 1627, was proved 14 Mar 1630/1.[4][5][6]

Burial

An inscription appears on a plaque in the Collegiate Church of St Mary, St Denys and St George, Manchester, England. It reads as follows (after translation from the Latin): "Here lies the body of Oswald Mosley, of Ancoats, Esquire, who died on the 9th day of November, in the year of our Lord, 1630, in the 47th year of his age, having, at the time of his death, by Ann, his wife, who survived him, five sons, viz.:-- Nicholas, Edward, Oswald, Samuel, and Francis; and three daughters, Ann, Margaret, and Mary."

Research Notes

  • Between 1602 and 1605 the family appears to have lived in Stockport, but in 1607 they returned to Manchester, where Oswald was Boroughreeve in 1607-08 [1], p. 16).
  • On January 23, 1608, Oswald acquired Ancoats in Manchester from Sir John Byron; it was never, in fact, acquired by his father Anthonie MOSLEY [1], p. 16).
  • Oswald and his family lived at Ancoats from 1608 until his death in 1630. He was variously Constable of Manchester (1609-10), Mayor of Stockport (1611), High Constable of the Hundred of Stockport (1612), and steward of the court leet of the Manor of Manchester from 1613 or 1616 [7]
  • 1608 - Oswald was made Executor of the will of Alexander Lowe.[8] "well beloved Sonne and Frend' Oswald Mosley of Manchester the younger"
