Biography
Elias "Eli" Moss was born about 1796 in South Carolina.[1]
He married Elizabeth "Dicy" Brock.[1]
Eli died in 1844 at McMinn County, Tennessee and was buried at Conasauga Baptist Church Cemetery, McMinn County, Tennessee. His memorial has links to those of family members.[1]
Uncertain Origin
This Eli or Elias Moss is not Elias Moss who was born 5 Oct 1796 in Cheshire, New Haven County, Connecticut to Theophilus Moss and Bede Hull. The Elias Moss who was born in Connecticut resided in Essex and Warren Counties, New York and died 20 May 1888 in Addison County, Vermont. This Connecticut borned Elias Moss named a son Hull Crossland Moss after his mother Bede Hull and his wife Rebecca Crossland.
Census
Eli resided in 1830 in McMinn County, Tennessee. The census transcription stated the family consisted of two males under age 10, three females under age 15 and one male adult and one female adult both in their thirties.[2][3]
Death
Eli Moss passed away in 1844.
Notes and Clues
Two clues to his birth are the 1830 census indicating he was born between 1790 and 1800 and the biography on his son stating he was born in South Carolina.
The Goodspeed Histories of Fayette and Hardeman Counties, Tennessee biography on Bartley H. Moss stated that Bartley Moss was
- the sixth of nine children born to Eli and Dicy (Brock) Moss. The parents were natives of South Carolina, and were married in that State. Early in life they immigrated to Tennessee, and settled in McMinn County, where they spent the remainder of their days.[4]
In the 1850 census, Dicy Moss (age 50) and Elizabeth Moss (age 18) resided with family of William and wife Hulda (age 32) Randolph in McMinn County, Tennessee. The death record for Hulda Randolph stated her parents were Eli Moss and Dicy Brock.[5]

There were two Elias Moss of about the same age. The son of Bede Hull and Theophilus Moss was born 5 Oct 1796 in New Haven CT and died 20 May 1888 in VT. He resided in Warren Co NY in 1860, 1870 and 1880. He had a son named Hull Moss. This profile is for another Elias Moss who died in 1844 in TN.
