Biography

Zella Mossman was born November 15, 1874 in Coesse, Indiana to John and Susan (Youngs) Mossman.[1] Zella was the youngest in the family, having two older brothers and two older sisters.

On October 27, 1897, Zella married Antrim Earl Barnes in Columbia City, Indiana.[3] In May of 1899, Zella and Antrim had a son, Charles. Antrim was a railroad engineer, and had been engineering trains in Nebraska and Wyoming prior to his marriage in Indiana. The month after his son was born, he and Zella separated, and she later filed for a divorce. The 1900 census shows her and Charles living with her parents.[4]

In 1910, Zella was working as a seamstress.[5] After her parents died (1913 and 1917), Zella moved to Chicago and lived the rest of her life there.[6,7,8] In 1920, she was working as a seamstress in a corset factory and her son was living with her.[6] In 1930, Zella lived in an apartment next door to Charles and his wife,[7] and she was living in the same apartment building in 1940.[8]

Zella died in Chicago in 1957.[1]
