William Alden Mote was born 27 Aug 1840 the son of Luke Smith Mote and Charity Jones.[1][2]
He married Mary Hunt on 4 Jul 1877 at Miami County, Ohio.[3] They had no children.
Alden Mote is one of the members of the "Richmond School" of painters among whom others were John Elwood Bundy. He was a photographer and artist, as was Bundy, operating the Mote Brothers photography studio (Richmond) with brother Elisha Mote. He studied with his uncle Marcus Mote, Barton Stone Hays and W. H. Hilliard and worked in both oil and water color favoring landscapes and portraits.
His painter uncle Marcus Mote and other Friends frequently commented that the Quaker church frowned upon the young man's proclivities as it frowned upon music.[2]
His portrait of Daniel G. Reid hangs in Reid Hospital, Richmond, Indiana and his portrait of artist Edna Stubbs Cathell is in the collection of Earlham College. His works are found in numerous other museum and private collections.
He passed away at his home 15 Jan 1917 at Richmond, Indiana[1] having suffered a heart attack sweeping snow.[2] He is interred at the Earlham Cemetery, Richmond, Indiana.[4]
