Biography

Jacob's life is something of a mystery. He is thought to have been illegitimate, but that's unproven.

He used the name Moyer (the alleged name of his father) in Hazleton, but he evidently began using Meyer (his mother's maiden name) at some point after leaving there. The below news article suggests he left Hazleton ca 1887, perhaps after his first wife Hannah (presumably) died; nothing is known of her. The next record of him is from his 1915 marriage record to Emily Carr in Saratoga Springs, NY; he's using the surname Meyer, and all subsequent census documents, city directories, and his wife's probate records, use that name. According to his marriage record to Emily, this was his 3rd marriage; his 2nd wife is unknown.

The last known reference to him was in his stepbrother Christian Dinklocker's 1934 obit; he was a "survivor" in Saratoga Springs, FL. This was probably a typo, and should have been NY vice FL, since all other references to him are in NY. City Directories for Saratoga Springs list him from 1919-1934, then nothing. His wife Emily's tombstone in Maplewood Cemetery, Saratoga Springs, NY has his name and birth year engraved on it, but without a death date; there's no record of his burial there, and no other indication of when/where he died.
